Category: Firmware Announcements

Hello CinemaGo and CinemaTube Mini owners,

CinemaGo = CinemaTube Mini + Wifi Adapter

We are happy to announce that the first official firmware update is now available. This time we added the MUZEE internet video (BETA version) so you can enjoy thousands of online video channels without any subscription fees.

To activate your MUZEE Internet TV channels, please perform the through “online update”. You can find that option by going to:

Home –> Setup –> System –> Software –> Online Update

We strongly suggest you using a wired Ethernet connection when performing the online update.

If that is not an option, please see this page for a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform a “USB update”.

Here is the release note for firmware version IPB15107151:

  1. Muzee Internet radio support
  2. Muzee Internet TV support (BETA)
  3. Improved eSATA compatibility
  4. Resolved photo thumbnail display issue via UPnP
  5. Resolved rebooting issue caused by “File Copy”
  6. Enhanced HFS+ compatibility

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate email us at service@brite-view.com.

***Please note the CinemaGo/CinemaTube Mini and the CinemaTube DO NOT share firmware. Forcing the firmware of the CinemaGo on the CinemaTube will cause the damage of the CinemaTube, and vice versa.***

CinemaTube Mini

Hello brite-Viewers,

TGIF! You might have noticed that there is a new firmware (IPB10106251) available for the CinemaTube today. Again, you can choose to perform an online update (which I think is the easiest) or the “USB update” (more “advanced” :) ). I’ll explain in detail about how to do both, later in this post.

Before I do that, though, please note that if you are a proud new owner of the CinemaTube, you will see that when you receive the box, it still has the IPB1009C021 firmware on it. We suggest that you update the firmware to IPB10106251 as the latest firmware addresses many known bugs within the C021.

IPB10106251 Release Note:

  1. Resolved photo thumbnail display issue via UPnP
  2. Resolved rebooting issue caused by “File Copy”
  3. Enhanced HFS+ compatibility

IMPORTANT:

  • If you choose to perform an online update:

Your CinemaTube will go from IPB1009C021 –> IPB10101111 –> IPB10106251. Yes, you’ll go through 2 (TWO)

updates and it is normal.

  • If you choose to perform a USB update:

You can take the shortcut and go directly from IPB1009C021 to IPB10106251; no problem.

Ok! Are you ready for a step-by-step guide to firmware update?

P.S. We’ll make this document available on our support page soon, and we can also email you the document if you send a request to service@brite-view.com. Enjoy your CinemaTube!

What’s in a name?

Dear brite-Viewers,

You may potentially hear about the existence of a “new” firmware update that is available on the Internet. To help our customer base gain a better understanding of the firmware release cycle, all US Domestic CinemaTube owners have the advantage of priority access to firmware updates. A great example is the firmware which was released on February 12, 2010 in the US affectionately knows as C2111.

brite-View provides our US Domestic installed base of CinemaTube owners with advanced access to the latest firmware developments and will typically release the firmware to our channel partners in the International space at a later date (between 30 and 45 days after the US launch) This brings us to the matter of a new release of firmware known as C3221, the only difference is upon first boot which sets PAL as the default viewing format. If you have any questions, feel free to leave us feedback here in our blog or take your discussion into the brite-View forums.

PLEASE NOTE: all instructions listed here are specifically for the US firmware. If you find a different firmware version on your CinemaTube with a different firmware number, please refer to your regional reseller to best assist you.

Dear brite-Viewers,

We know that you are anxious about the official release of firmware IPB10102111. In fact, the most anxious of you have already tried out the USB firmware update. Most had great success but unfortunately some had issues with the update. Then, they grew frustrated like our good friend Paul. Apparently he was pissed, too.

(See his brite-View Facebook page message:)

“I am pissed! I did everything stated at http://briteview.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/why-can%E2%80%99t-i-update-firmware-why-why-why-i-have-tried-everything/ and now I have a bricked CinemaTube. It will not leave the USB update screen after hours. It will no longer light up the drive light on my USB thumb drive (although …the drive works fine when connected to a computer). I tried the 10 sec on the power button and replug. It is dead stuck on the USB screen. RMA please! It is a mystery to me that you can handle something as sophisticated as online update but you’ve turned simple USB update into a science project.”

(He stopped by yesterday to pick up a new CinemaTube with firmware version IPB10102111 loaded, so all is good… right? We hope?) :)

WARNING!

Because of the increase in the firmware file size, you will see TWO updates this time. This is behavior is expected and normal.

  1. IPB10101111 –> This version will first modify the online update feature on the CinemaTube so it can load the actual firmware properly. (3-7 minutes) When this is complete, go back to the “online update” screen for the second update.
  2. IPB10102111 –> This is the actual firmware. (5-10 minutes)

DO NOT USE a wireless connection for the firmware update because it will take 30-60 minutes depending on your network speed (and frankly, A LOT can go wrong in 30-60 minutes).

DO USE a WIRED connection.

Capice?  Grazie. Ciao!

You have heard all the buzz about our latest CinemaTube beta firmware update that was released on February 12, 2010. One of our most popular requests was to post up some pictures of the new UI; being the technologists that we are, we decided to post up a video of the new UI instead. Once you finish drooling over the video, head on over to our brite-View forums to download it.

You can download a copy of this new firmware by visiting the brite-View Support Forums or by using the following link. Add Media Files

Our customers have mixed feelings about the latest firmware we originally released on January 5th, 2010.

From one customer:

“Wow! What a huge difference! MUCH better. I can’t wait to play with the new features. Love the NAS feature and the improvement in the UI when browsing movies with the preview turned on. No more pausing. The copy feature is neat too. Well done. It’s like I bought a new unit!”

There is also another kind of voice, though:

“It may just be me but after updating to the new interface every video I try from PlayOn plays for about 5 sec and then freezes with the word buffering on the screen. The videos from my attached hard drive and computer play fine.”

So the issue was that the new firmware looks nice, has new features, makes faster navigation, but… it broke the UPnP experience. (!)

An AVSer pointed out,

“Apparently we have two types of users using the CT

1) Those who connect via network and stream their files

2) Those who connect a USB drive to the unit directly.”

The first  kind of users would not like the new firmware (IPB1009C241), so we recommend that you downgrade the firmware to the previous version.

The second kind of users would prefer the new firmware, so if you do not need the UPnP streaming capability at the moment, we suggest that you keep it.

BUT our server did something stupid. After we learned about the UPnP issue, we pulled the new firmware (IPB1009C241) from the server. However the older firmware then popped up, prompting for another “firmware update”.

Some people were shocked to see the “reverse” after the 2nd “update”.

We received messages like this one:

“Hi, I downloaded the update from last week and got the new UI with that update. Now, my CT prompted me that there’s an new firmware update, knowing that I already downloaded the one with the new UI, I thought I’d give this new firmware a try since I thought that the new UI with come with this new update. After the update is done, I’m surprised to get the old UI back. What gives?”

We admit that we did not do a good job communicating what is coming and what is to be expected, and we have learned a lesson the hard way.

We have made the new firmware (IPB1009C241) available on our website on the “Support” page and under “CinemaTube”, but now marked as “beta”.

We are now working with the chip manufacturer to work out a solution. The original code that we used to create the new firmware broke the UPnP communication, so we have to work with them to solve the problem. We promise to get this worked out ASAP.
